How bulb Digital Portfolios Fit Into A Student’s Remote Learning Journey

Digital portfolios allow teachers to track student growth and assess competencies, even remotely. With the ability to create personalized learning environments for each student, digital portfolios help to give students a voice and choice with their learning. In the infographic below we demonstrate how digital portfolios fit into a student’s remote learning journey.

1. The teacher gives an assignment.

The learning journey begins in one of two places, through a learning management system or directly in bulb.

  1. With an LMS, teachers assign work to be done in bulb and keep track of student grades within the system.
  2. Without an LMS, teachers create and assign work through their bulb class group.

2. The student researches & creates content.

Today’s students have more access to information and inspiration than ever before. The digital era has introduced new ways to expand knowledge and gain perspective. For example, students can discover new content and create their own with apps like Google Drive, Adobe Suites, YouTube, Flipgrid, Quizlet, and Nearpod. With so much access to content and information, it leaves us with this question —where is the best place to maintain, synthesize, and curate it all?

3. The student brings their learning together.

A digital portfolio is where learning comes together. bulb integrates with 1900+ apps, helping students embed their research and content to show process and progression. For example, here are some ways bulb users bring their learning together:

  • Primary students document development by photographing their handwriting and recording themselves reading throughout the school year. They use bulb as the place to store these pieces of content to refer back to.
  • Secondary students compile their class notes from Quizlet, Evernote and other apps, along with their assignments they completed in bulb to create helpful study guides.
  • Higher education students use bulb to complete capstone projects. bulb allows them to compile research, write their final paper, and display other multimedia artifacts in one place.

4. The student completes the assignment.

Students submit a one-of-a-kind bulb page via an integrated LMS or to their bulb class group. Students, their peers, and teachers can provide feedback via bulb’s in-line commenting feature. They can also easily share their work with people outside of their class using private share links.

Every student needs a digital portfolio. It most accurately represents the student’s individuality and skills for academic and professional opportunities. The benefits of a digital portfolio are vast; from helping students get the job, or developing a deep love of learning. Here are the top seven reasons every student needs a digital portfolio.

7. See growth overtime.

Keeping your work in one place allows you to see growth over time. Seeing growth helps students realize where they began. It’s inspiring to see skills improving over time. This motivates students to put more effort into improving their skills and deepening their learning. A great example of this is this article where an “Artist Shows His Progress From 2 Years Old To 28” (photos included in the link).

6. Tell a student’s story beyond GPA.

What exactly does GPA measure—good study habits, strong test-taking skills and on-time completion of assignments? A high GPA is rewarding, but the fact will always be that GPA is a number. Numbers can’t express individuality, passions and skills like a digital portfolio can. Numbers are unfavorable to students that are poor test takers or who don’t perform well in structured environments Unlike GPAs, digital portfolios are capable of telling a student’s whole story.

5. Identify learning methods.

Traditionally, students are not taught in a classroom setting how to identify their learning style. It takes time and consistent effort and resources to discover how a student learns best. Digital portfolios provide students with the tools to explore their learning preferences. Being able to work with any type of media gives the student options in displaying their work, and helps the educator identify more productive ways to teach the individual student. This article goes more into detail about why “It’s Worth Taking The Time to Figure It Out”.

"Some information changes over time but the ability to learn lasts forever. That's why we need to focus more of our time on the process of learning, not just the product."

4. Focus on the learning process.

Learning with digital portfolios helps students capture and reflect on their process, which:

  • Allows students to explain their thinking, find ways to improve, and come up with new ways to solve problems.
  • Helps identify strengths and weaknesses, refine skills, and find a career the student can be passionate about.
  • “Fosters a growth mindset, creates a student-centered environment and reduces stress for students”
(Focus on the Process and Results Will Follow).

3. Leave school with a lifetime tool.

When students consistently use digital portfolios over the course of their learning, they graduate with more than a transcript. Research shows that student engagement increases by 33% when digital portfolios are used in a classroom. A more engaged student means better retention of the materials covered. Students are also building a practical tool that can be used to apply for internships, jobs and educational opportunities.

2. Build critical skills for a career.

Using a digital portfolio requires skills that are needed in the workforce. Behind the creation of e-portfolios lie skills of ordering, planning, selecting, synthesizing, discussing, reflecting, and designing content to present to different audiences. While developing this content, learners may also give and receive feedback and will almost certainly improve their digital capability.

1. Digital portfolios are the new resume.

“Here’s What Employers Are Looking at When They Google You”: an online portfolio. Today’s students need a digital portfolio. Not only are modern demands in education and the workforce moving students towards creating digital portfolios, a resume that’s accompanied by an ePortfolio also helps students:

  • Stand out from the competition
  • Establish an online presence beyond a social media
  • Show individuality and professionalism
  • Provides evidence of accomplishments and skills

Employers want to see proof of the skills on resumes, as well as individuality.

"Resumes are a point in time and are not reflective of the human."

It’s no wonder “57% of employers are less likely to interview a candidate they can’t find online,” A resume is not enough. A digital presence is needed.

Digital portfolios are not only the foundation of a student’s continuing education and employability but an integral component of classroom instruction, right here and right now.

5 Ways Digital Portfolios Improve Reading & Writing

Here are five simple strategies to help students enjoy practicing and refining their reading, writing and literacy skills.

1. They invite expression and creativity.

Your students have an array of tools for multimedia creation and application, successfully targeting all five components of ELA: listening, speaking, viewing, writing and reading. Help your students master these areas and develop a varied skill set for any curriculum.

2. They support all learning styles.

Your students learn differently from one another. Digital portfolios make lessons resonate with all students and learning styles. Auditory learners can listen to instructions or pronunciations, visual learners can use videos or images, kinesthetic learners can document experiences or processes and reading/writing learners can further their skills.

3. They facilitate discussion and collaboration.

Your students can collaborate, comment and gain perspective by viewing each other’s work in bulb. Spark engaging conversations around literature by hosting book reviews. Or give feedback during the writing process.

4. They can translate and share information in any language.

Your students can share their smarts with the world. Translate a digital portfolio to any language for acquisition or to land an opportunity in a different country.

5. They encourage a lifetime of writing.

Your students can express and discover themselves through a digital portfolio. Give your students a platform with no creative boundaries. Encourage your students to write about anything and collect work done for reflection and growth.

How to Make Capstone Projects in a Digital Portfolio

Many capstone projects culminate with a presentation. Let’s face it, not everyone is comfortable standing up in front of the room to present to classmates and peers. However, it’s an important life skill we all need. Here are some tips to ease the pain and help students build professional presentation building skills for life.

Reflect on presentation material.

Are your students taking time to document, reflect and understand the processes they used to construct their presentation? Documenting the process and reflecting on the project can help students prepare the script or talking points.  And when student go back through the project, teachers gain insights into the process and progress.

Here are some reflection questions to help your students organize their thoughts, ponder what they learned and how to present their findings.

  • What inspired the presentation idea?
  • What prior knowledge did you have of the presentation material before you started?
  • What part of the project came most easily to you?
  • What part of the project are you most proud of?
  • What area was the most challenging? How did you tackle those challenges? Would you have approached those challenges differently if you were to do it over again?
  • What area do you think you grew the most?
  • What does the audience need to know about the process of your project that they might not have already known?
  • What artifacts (pictures, videos, audio files, etc.) will be needed to support the main idea?

Use powerful and effective presentation tools.

What tools are students using to communicate their ideas? How can students use several different tools to share their work and ideas that will last beyond presentation day?

We recommend these.

  • All your work in one place. Create, publish and present all from the same tool, such as bulb Digital Portfolios, in a sleek, integrated way. Not only will this alleviate stress for you and your students, who are trying to tie up many loose ends at the end of the year, but parents will thank you for the permanence of their students’ work. Have your students try a digital portfolio tool, like bulb.
  • Web Apps means no technical issues. Need to get through 30 presentations in one day? Don’t do the USB/cable/projector dance. Present from the same platform on any device. The only requirement is having access to the internet. When your presentation is built in bulb, it’s available from anywhere. Simply access it using your secure log-in and password.
  • Use images. Images say a 1,000 words, right? Combined with text, images are powerful and can convey a lot of emotion and provide context. Images can be created by the student or sourced online, but make sure your students are honoring copyright law. Pixabay and Unsplash are two free image sites, among many more.
  • Video and audio clips to capture a student’s actual voice. A student might find that they communicate more effectively through the spoken word, more so than the written word. Have them record a voice clip on their iPad or phone and upload it to a bulb page.
  • Create an infographic. We live in a visual world and our brains tend to love information presented in an organized, graphical and interesting manner. You can create infographics on canva or content interactive using ThingLink.
  • Break up dense blocks of text. Be thoughtful about organizing your information and breaking your content into digestible paragraphs. Be intentional about breaking your content into paragraphs. Use headers to categorize information visually. Use bullets and numbers when listing pieces of a whole. Hyperlink when possible and provide more information by giving images and videos captions.

Visual, interactive presentations are just better. We know the one-size-fits-all learning method doesn’t work anymore. Your students can be presenting information in more than one way, whether it means an image, video, audio file or more.

Examples

automotive designer

This student documents her process of creating a final art project. She introduces her passion for cars, the object of her piece, to lay a foundation for the project. She builds out the history of car art and how she became interested in them. Then she brings us step by step through her art process — from drafting to adding color and texture, and editing.

This group of students researched, identified and tackled the issue of endangered elephants in Africa by creating a kinetic elephant model and presenting it to the Dallas Zoo. See how the project evolved, from start to finish.

This design student builds out every step of the ideation process behind a brand’s logo.

See how she moves through the process herself to create a logo for her own make belief company.

The combination of infographic, images, videos and lists make this page easy and enjoyable to digest.
